Take Time for Abu Taubah: Support the ‘Glimpses of Qur’an’ Campaign

We Praise Allah and are pleased to announce Mercy Mission’s special release of ‘Glimpses of Qur’an: Imam Abu Taubah’s highly acclaimed 30-part series on the relevance of Qur’an in daily life.

The Official Release of Glimpses of Quran

Glimpses of Quran (pictured above is not actual box set; actual product will vary)

This limited-time offer not only features the beloved Ustadh reviewing the essence of each juz in his distinctly straightforward manner, but showcases a valuable opportunity to support Abu Taubah and his family.

With the sudden arrest of Abu Taubah in 23 August 2011, his twelve young children and wives were flung into a world of uncertainty. Struggling not only with the indefinite detention of the Imam characterised by the spectre of wildly fabricated charges, the family can barely cope with the astronomical legal costs of defending Abu Taubah’s innocence in addition to maintaining the everyday needs of an extraordinarily special family.

With the purchase of this box set, one can contribute directly to Abu Taubah’s support fund and simultaneously support the dawah that the Imam dedicated his scholarly life to. But the benefits of seeking knowledge while helping the prisoners does not stop here; in order to reap a greater reward of this exciting opportunity, please share the ‘Glimpses of Quran‘ Campaign with friends, family, fellow students, and community members.

If you wish to contribute directly to the fund, please see here. Remember to always keep Abu Taubah and his family in and your duas, and don’t forget to write to him to lend him your support and share insights about the DVD box set you just bought:

HHUGS Emergency Appeal: May “Cease to Operate in a Matter of Months”

Dear Donors, Supporters and Friends,

We write to you at a critical time for HHUGS. The mere survival of the charity is at risk and we require your generous support once again to ensure that the work of HHUGS does not come to an end. For this reason, we urge you to read the message below and come to our aid in this blessed month of Dhil-Hijjah.

As many of you know, the HHUGS bank account was unexpectedly closed down earlier this year without any stated reason. As a consequence of this inexplicable action, we lost all our regular standing orders that had steadily built up over the course of many years. While we were desperately trying to open a new bank account, which took a painstaking three months, our regular income had stopped altogether and donations had reduced to a trickle. Nevertheless, the work of the charity continued unabated supporting over 80 families across the country.

The closure of the previous bank account has taken a huge toll on our finances. Since the inception of the new bank account, only a small fraction of the standing orders have been reinstated by our donors.  It is important to note that the income from regular monthly standing orders is critical to every charity and is the rock on which a charity is built. It provides stability and ensures the charity’s long term survival. Without this, we have been suffering huge losses and our funds are dwindling rapidly as monthly expenditure far exceeds our income. If we continue like this, then HHUGS will cease to operate in a matter of months.    Read the rest of this entry »

Babar Ahmad and Talha Ahsan: End the Silence!

It has now been one month since Babar Ahmad and Talha Ahsan were extradited to the US. Without being permitted to even make one final telephone call to their loved ones, they were transferred into the custody of US marshals and flown to Connecticut, where they are now in 23 hour solitary isolation.

Since their extradition, neither Babar nor Talha have been able to telephone their families or write to them despite sufficient funds having been transferred to them to do this. Furthermore, letters which the family members have sent to the men have not been given to them, increasing their isolation. The families have no idea what condition Babar and Talha are in or why they have been unable to communicate.

We request all campaigners and supporters to write to the British Foreign Secretary, the British Ambassador to the US and and your own Member of Parliament to request that they urgently intervene to ensure that regular contact is established between the men and their families.

Sample letters are below for your convenience (please do not forget to insert your name and and full address) but it is always more effective to use your own words. It is also possible to send your comments using Twitter and Facebook.   Read the rest of this entry »

Munir Farooqi’s Upcoming Appeal: Flyering Help Needed

Munir Farooqi, a well-known Da’ee spreading Islam through Da’wah stalls in the Market street, Manchester City Centre, and in the Longsight areas, was convicted of Four Life Sentences for alleged recruitment of Taliban fighters.

Two undercover officers, posing as converts to Islam, secretly recorded conversations for over a year without ever documenting any plan or scheme to commit any illegal act. According to the North West Counter Terrorism Unit, “However, what we were able to prove was their ideology”: a summation of terrorism-related prosecutions in recent years.

Munir is now appealing his unjust conviction and needs your help in distributing flyers that educate the public about the importance of this case.

If you live in the UK, please contact the Save the Family Home Campaign at
07522428709 or 07727233665
to flyer a street, neighbourhood, local business, civic group, or area masjid
or forward this message to those who may be able to help.

Shaker Aamer Denied Passage Home as Torture Continues

A decade after its vengeful establishment, a post-Bush incarnation of the Guantanamo nightmare persists, continuing to cage 166 Muslim prisoners. One of them is Britisher Shaker Aamer, kept in isolation in Camp 5 Echo. A Decade of Injustice examines possible motivations for keeping Shaker Aamer detained and why his return is urgent.

It is more urgent than ever that we demand his release as Shaker’s recent testimony reveals that abuses at Guantanamo are ongoing:

On July 20, 2011, he reports: ‘The authorities told us, “You’ll have a beautiful Ramadan.” It was in Camp 5, and they said there would be no showers, and no recreation.

They tortured another guy using the nose tube, until he cried. They kept him on a stretcher, with a slow drip on the feed. I banged on the door when this was happening, then fainted from my own lack of eating. I was taken to hospital.’

In a brief explanation of the sleep deprivation, he has stated that he was “sleeping in light,” and there was “no darkness to sleep.” The lighting, as is typical, has been on “24/7″ — and he has also been confined to his cell for 22 hours a day, with just two hours allowed in the recreation yard from 6 am to 8 am every day.

He has explained how he cannot sleep because the guards have been “speaking loud through the night with all kind of noises — cleaning, moving things, shaking the locks of the cell, turning the light on and off,” and how they have also regularly shone a flashlight in his face, and liberally spread detergent like pine oil or Clorox. He has explained how the strong smell fills his cell so that he can’t breathe.   Read the rest of this entry »

From Arrest to Release: An Overview of the UK Prison Experience

“Muslims are breaking records with the judicial system in ways that are not imaginable.”

In 2007, Abdul Muhid was arrested along with three other Muslims for protesting the infamously racist Danish cartoons a year earlier. Convicted and sentenced to six years of imprisonment, he shares his experiences about the British justice system.

His talk covers the minutia involving pre-dawn raids, stop and search laws, repressive bail conditions, unfair trials, faulty evidence, imprisonment, release and probation. Additionally he addresses issues of freedom of speech, rampant racism within law enforcement, physical and psychological torture and abuse directed at Muslim prisoners, as well as the risks of suicide and the importance of sending letters.

The ex-prisoner also inspires with his recollection of Muslim solidarity and brotherhood behind bars and spiritual elevation achieved under such oppressive conditions. Especially touching is Abdul Muhid’s account of the serious tragedy of David English, the chilling horror faced by 17 year old Zahid Mubarak, the remorse inducing gratitude of Khalid al-Fawwaz, Dr. Mohammad Syed Alam’s delicate condition, and the beautiful Omar Khayam’s request to all of you.

For more information on how to fulfil your obligation of writing to and supporting prisoners, please see muslimprisoners.com (UK) and freedetainees.org (US). Prisoner listings can be found in the resources section of the aseerun website.

Caged in the USA: What Happens after Extradition?

Five men held in British prisons collectively for over 40 years without charge fought valiantly against extradition to the US. Now they face the likelihood of a new ordeal in a ‘Supermax’ prison, confinement under some of the harshest conditions known in the western world.

In a unique event, CagePrisoners brings together three distinct yet united voices to inform the public of the harrowing conditions and harsh treatment that prisoners in the United States endure and the lasting impact it leaves on survivors and their families. Guest speakers will include:

Robert King, one of the ‘Angola 3′, who survived 29 excruciating years of brutality in US prisons as a political prisoner for a crime he didn’t commit;

Omar Deghayes a Britisher of Libyan descent who endured six years of abuse and torture in the notorious Guantanamo Bay prison, without charge;

Hamja Ahsan, the younger brother of Talha Ahsan, one of five men extradited to the US after being jailed for six years in the UK without charge.

Also present will be Victoria Brittain, moderating the experience, and Lee Jasper, Black British activist and former Senior Policy Advisor on Equalities to the Mayor of London.
